UXPALA PRESENTS WORLD USABILITY DAY 2018: Dark UX Case Studies and Actions You Can Take

Have you ever had a client say they want to build a the Death Star product? Unwittingly, what comes to mind is how easily the rebels blew up that WMD – 3 times, to be accurate.

Taking advantage of human haste, inattention of desire, frustration factors and the sense of “lacking” – or the fear of missing out (FOMO) – is the dark side of UX and the definition of Dark Patterns and Dark UX.

We’ve all met services that are a pain to unsubscribe from, products in our shopping cart we’ve never added there, money withdrawn from our account without any notice – the list could go on. In this event we’ll listen to 3 great case studies and learn about Dark Patterns that drive us and our users to madness!

Plus our speakers will give us insight, remedies and actionable points on what we can do as designers, to regroup and refocus efforts on usability and user love.

Schedule

How Good UX Designers Can Save the Climate from Evil Darkness – Jill Vacarra

For too long the the environmental impact of the products we design has remained hidden, out of sight, out of mind. But we can no longer talk about the ethics of UX without focusing on what WE can do to design sustainable UX. This talk shines a light on the big dirty secret of digital design’s giant carbon footprint, with concrete and innovative steps UX designers can take to be Sustainable UX Superheroes.

How I’ve Failed Users (So You Don’t Have To) – Michael Newcomb

Things don’t always go as planned, but if you’re reflective, hindsight can be 20/20. As I’ve grown as a designer, I’ve started treating past failures as important learning experiences to ensure that our best of intentions and efforts were never in vain. This talk will give you a methodology for approaching those critical moments where you can make a difference as a designer by unpacking some scenarios where I have failed. By gaining fluency with a variety of important research tactics and soft skills, you can avoid some common mistakes the next time you are torn between conflicting business and User goals.
