Event Details

In Melbourne we will be visiting St.Vincents Simulation Centre. This is a state-of-the-art Human Simulator that comprises a sophisticated integration of software and hardware built around a human mannequin. The mannequin breathes, has pulses and can respond to intravenous drugs, CPR, defibrillation, intubation, ventilation, catheterisation and many other procedures.

In short, the mannequin mirrors as close as is currently possible, the physiological and pharmacological reactions of a human being.

The Simulation Centre is a human-centred training facility that provides healthcare professionals with the ability to focus on acquiring the skills required to administer healthcare to patients in a safe environment.

Healthcare professionals are video taped for detailed post-training analysis and debriefing. This allows the health care professional to witness themselves at work and identify their strengths and weaknesses.

This tour of the simulation centre will give you an insight into the usability considerations of a healthcare training facility.

Making Users Quitters

In addition to the tour, Peter Benda will present Making Users Quitters. Peter will share with us details of some recent research on enhancing smoking cessation programs. The research focuses on interaction in the mobile space, and examines the role of persuavive technology, social support and recent social networking mechanisms (Web 2.0). Peter will also discuss how these studies have utilised participatory design methods and diary studies.

Peter Benda is currently a senior research fellow in the Department of Information Systems at the University of Melbourne. Previously he has worked at Sensis, Telstra, and also some independent consulting in user-centred design.

The tour can only cater for small groups so there are limited places available for this event. If you are interested in attending, please register to secure a place as soon as possible.
