Stanford HCI research group, managed by prof. Scott Klemer, has explored this area through several lenses. First, they built ButterflyNet, an augmented notebook for field scientists. With ButterflyNet, a researcher collects field notes with the inking digital pen and paper notebook. These notes are
automatically correlated with other field data, such as digital
photographs. Second, they have explored a class of applications that we
call Interactive Gigapixel Prints (GIGAprints). With GIGAprints,
people can work with large printed surfaces such as maps and data
visualizations. Finally, they are building a Paper Applications toolkit to
enable designers and scientists alike to build paper-centric applications
tailored to their domain.
