Overview

The WUD 2009 activity was a hands-on tactile design activity. We had 4 teams participating in the prototype design on the Wednesday, and then on Thursday we had 4 volunteer usability testers and 4 judges evaluate the "systems". The winner was announced on the Friday, and was selected based on judge ratings and test data outcomes.

It was fun for all involved... looking forward to next year!!

Background and Motivation

With the world’s population growing and the impact of human activity on the environment becomng more evident, the need to design for sustainability is imperative. The goal of this exercise is to take the notion of sustainable design down to the level of the individual, and their daily lives. One of the simplest and most grassroots methods of demonstrating sustainable design is via a home-based recycling system.

The Task

Your task is to design a residential “recycling system” that promotes use through simplicity. That’s the easy part. The challenge is to design it for specific audiences and lifestyles, and then have it tested for usability to ensure you have hit the mark. Are you up for the challenge?

Business Objective

The underlying theme of this exercise is to diminish some human impact on the earth by supporting the 3rd “R” in Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Your goal is to design a residential recycling system that will increase recycling participation through ease of use.

Solution Requirements

For the purposes of your usability test, you will need to have a prototype of the following:

  1. Recyling system structure
  2. Recycling system documentation

Your solution should address the following backlog stories.

A user should be able to:

  • Access a list of acceptable materials to be recycled
  • Deposit the following items into the appropriate repository: a glass jar, a pizza box, and a yogurt container
  • View a schedule for recycling pick-up
  • See how much recycling (by weight) they have deposited and the total cumulative weight over the present year.

Key Deliverables

Design: Concept sketches and prototype

Usability testing: Test on two-three subjects with a short summary of recommendations

Scope and Constraints

Users: You will be given a single persona representing a user living in the greater Vancouver area. The recycling centre is to be designed for this persona.

Time line: You will only have the Wednesday lunch hour to produce your design. Final designs should be completed and submitted by 1:30 on Wednesday, 11/4.

Budget: You will only be able to use the provided supplies. No “outside” supplies are allowed.

As an extra twist, teams may opt for one or more “lifelines”.  These will be included in your supply kit, and you must give the pass for one to a UCD member if you want to redeem it.  If you don’t use them, however, you will be awarded bonus points!  The two lifelines are:

  1. Designer Advice – You may borrow a UCD member for 10 minutes
  2. You may access the internet (using the laptop provided) for 5 minutes

Judging Criteria:

Your team will be judged on the following:

  • How many lifelines did you use?
  • How thorough was your usability testing?
  • How creative was your solution?
  • How did users rate your solution?
